How to: Build a decking area

For a 3.6m x 3.6m ground-level decking area, follow these basic steps to create a strong and stable decking frame.

1. Prepare the area
Clear the area of vegetation, debris and loose material. Ensure the ground is reasonably level and suitable for supporting the decking structure.

2. Build the outer frame
We would generally recommend using 5" x 2" joists to construct the outside frame. Make sure the frame is square, level and securely fixed together.

3. Install the joists
Install the internal joists at approximately 450mm centres. The joists should run opposite to the direction the decking boards will be laid.

For a 3.6m length:

3600mm ÷ 450mm = 8 joist spaces Allow additional joists for the outside frame, with approximately 13 joists in total for this example.

4. Add noggins
Fit noggins between the joists to help prevent movement and provide additional strength and stability to the frame.

5. Check the frame
Before laying the decking, check that the frame is level, square and securely fixed. Make sure the joists are evenly spaced and adequately supported.

6. Lay the decking boards
Lay the decking boards across the joists, leaving approximately 5mm spacing between each board to allow for drainage and natural movement of the timber.

For a 3.6m width, you will need approximately 29 decking boards, we would recommend 125mm spacings for the boards. We supply 27mm and 32mm decking boards in a range of lengths. We recommend allowing a few extra boards for cutting, mistakes and finishing the edges.

7. Secure the boards
Fix each decking board securely to the joists using suitable decking screws. As a guide, allow approximately 12 screws per board.

For 29 boards, this works out at approximately 348 screws, so we would recommend allowing around 400–420 screws.

8. Finish the decking
Once all the boards are securely fixed, trim any overhanging boards and finish the edges as required. Check all fixings and ensure the finished decking is secure and safe to use.
